Brandt Brauer Frick’s “Hugo” Music Video Depicts The Blur Of Life On The Road

There's a certain mystique to the life of a touring musician: new places and people every day, not a lot of sleep, the rush of performing, the monotony of transportation. In their new music video for the DJ-Kicks exclusive track "Hugo," Brandt Brauer Frick have found a way to encapsulate the experience in short form, using a rapidfire montage format culled from over 15,000 pictures shot during their recent performances. Watch the video and read Daniel Brandt's description below. DJ-Kicks is out this week, and available at local record stores as well as iTunes, Amazon and the !K7 store.
As everyone produces a big mass of photos/data on a regular basis since the smartphone is in everyone's hands, nobody is ever able to actually go through them anymore. The moments of looking back actually never happen. To take this even further we invented a new happening while touring called the "Shoot out." In a shoot out everyone takes out their smartphone and tries to take as many photos of all other people involved as possible which results in having loads of photos from different perspectives. This was the starting point of this video and also the need to have those photos not be completely lost in piles of data no one will ever go through again. It was more of a practical solution of getting those photos from the past two years into a context that people will actually see them but we also don't need to bore them off with a slide show at home as no one wants to look at personal photos from other people anymore longer than a second (except our parents). The video consists of a selection from originally around 15.000 photos. -Daniel Brandt

A Deeper Shade of Dance on Breach’s DJ-Kicks

Scoring a top 10 hit (as Breach has this summer with "Jack") is a dream come true for most musicians. It also must be a little bit strange though, especially for an artist with the history and depth that Breach (a/k/a Ben Westbeech) has. In fact, the Breech project was originally conceived as an underground counterpart to the Westbeech's work under his given name. “The thing is not to lose sight of why you started making music in the first place," he says. "I wasn’t trying to get in the Top Ten. I just care about making deep records that I get off on.” It's those same "deep records" that are showcased on Breach's new DJ-Kicks mix; which deftly incorporates everything from €2 basement finds (in the form of Winx - "How's The Music") to spanking new tracks from some of Westbeech's contemporaries, and of course, a new original Breach track made specifically for the mix. “I’ve grown up with DJ Kicks," Westbeech says. "For me it’s a very important series and I didn’t want to throw it together at a time when I’ve never been as busy. It came at a pretty crazy point in my life, but I feel I’ve done myself justice with it.” Breach - DJ-Kicks is out November 11th (12th in the US). Full tracklist and tour dates after the jump.

Video: Maceo Plex DJ-Kicks Interview

One of Maceo Plex's stated goal with his DJ-Kicks mix was to take a forward-looking approach to the music and selection, rather than getting mired in retro-ism. That emphasis on the future seems to have extended to this video interview, which sees the DJ / producer speaking about his contribution to the DJ-Kicks series amidst some incredible 3D visuals from The Butchers. Hear the DJ-Kicks Exclusive Track “Galactic Cinema” from Maceo Plex

It's always a pleasure when DJ-Kicks artists challenge themselves for the new piece of music they create for their mix. In keeping with the dark, futuristic feel of his set, Maceo Plex departs slightly from the disco and bassline sounds for which he's highly regarded and delivers a complex and reflective track in "Galactic Cinema." Beatport will have a single featuring both "Galactic Cinema" and another DJ-Kicks exclusive track "Mind on Fire" on April 15th. The full DJ-Kicks mix comes out April 29th/30th.
