MICHAEL MAYER DJ-KICKS

Following last year’s full-length LP, ‘&’, which saw him extensively collaborate with an impressive host of contemporaries and friends, including Joe Goddard, Prins Thomas and Agoria, Michael Mayer is set to contribute to the legendary DJ Kicks series. Spanning sixteen tracks, the mix finds Mayer is just as generous of a mood, composing a musical journey that spans his ever-expanding record collection, and above all, his defining instinct to share the beauty of music with others.

“Kicks has turned out to be a pretty international affair, especially if you compare it with Immer 1 or Fabric 13, which consisted almost 100% of German productions”, highlights Mayer. “At that time, there were such incredible things happening in my direct neighborhood and all over Germany. In the meantime, that spark has traveled a lot since then. The sound I’ve been pushing is often falsely described as “minimal”. Minimal used to be a thing in the pre-Kompakt days, mid 90s. After that I took much more interest in an eclectic way of playing music.”

Alongside this consistent, all-embracing attitude to music, ‘emotive’ is still perhaps the term best associated with Mayer’s leanings as a DJ, and as the man himself once observed, “there is room on the dancefloor for emotions other than euphoria.” Certainly, DJ Kicks delivers on this expectation, balancing wistful passages with frequent bursts of high energy aimed squarely at the dancefloor.

MATTHEW DEAR DJ-KICKS

A man of many musical hats, Texas born, Detroit raised Dear has a wide reaching discography that takes in face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion. Often with a gothic slant and full of curiousness, his pensive but playful music is an intoxicating distillation of many different influences, often with his own stylised vocals at the centre.

“There are snippets of friends and family strewn throughout the mix. A lot of the vocal interludes you hear are from a portable recorder I’ve carried with me over the years.”

As co-founder of both Ghostly International and Spectral Sound, Dear has also been responsible for some of the underground scene’s most exciting new music, plenty of which appears here. Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed and always evolving career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special.
Included along the way are three brand new and exclusive cuts from Dear himself, one under his own name and two as Audion. They are typically weird and intriguing cuts that tie the whole unhinged and freaky mix together. Also helping to add to the left-of-centre afterparty vibe are inclusions by artists as diverse as Thatmanmonkz and Matrixxmann, ItaloJohnson and Pearson Sound, Randomer and Simian Mobile Disco.

“I always have a lot of unreleased music laying around, those I included on here seemed to fit. A mix like this is always a good place to showcase my own productions, but I didn’t want to oversaturate it with my own stuff.”

Wholly timeless yet totally of its time, this is the first new work from Dear in a while. Once again, though, it proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left of centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. In his considered hands, they all make perfect sense.

“I wanted to create a mix that could be listened to anywhere, and reflect a little bit of everything that I play. Whether you’re in your car, preparing to open the club, or having a bottle of wine with friends at home, this mix is for you.”

DJ Tennis DJ-Kicks out now

Next up on DJ-Kicks is Life And Death label founder DJ Tennis. And he’s been granted not one but two discs to showcase his eclectic yet coherent selection. The mix comes as a double CD and triple vinyl release featuring 4 exclusive tracks. Available now.

DJ Tennis is Manfredi Romano, a lifelong music fanatic who started out managing punk bands, progressed to putting on leftfield events, set up one of the most important Italian rock and electronic booking agencies, then started the Life And Death label. Since then Life and Death has launched acts like Tale of Us, Mind against and Vaal. Tennis’s own recorded output is selective and stylish, often featuring real melodies and a musicality that can be lacking in dance music. That knack for the musical and emotive side of things characterises both cerebral mixes he has put together here.

The mix includes brand new original from DJ Tennis featuring Fink called ‘Certain Angels,’ plus new Tennis versions of tunes by Pole and Frank Brettschneider, and finally an unreleased track, ‘Paratrooper,’ from acclaimed Tel Aviv duo Red Axes. All in all it’s a thoughtfully composed mix that’s subversive yet seductive in equal measure.… read more...

Michael Mayer Mixes DJ-Kicks: Out May 2017

Michael Mayer is a multi-faceted talent. Kompakt, the label he co-runs, is an electronic music institution. He's also a gifted producer, as last year's album & demonstrated. This Spring, Mayer reminds us that he's a peerless DJ as he takes the reigns for an ambitious and satisfying DJ-Kicks mix. Spanning sixteen tracks, the mix finds Mayer in a generous mood, composing a musical journey that spans his ever-expanding record collection, and above all, his defining instinct to share the beauty of music with others.

“On an abstract level, the approach was basically the same for both projects”, observes Mayer. “For '&' I put together a group of people that are close to my heart. For Kicks it was a group of records that are like friends to me. All of the tracks I used went through heaven and hell with me. They've become true companions. Circling in on and bringing together these friends was the only criterion for the making of this mix. I wanted it to be as personal as possible.”

Michael Mayer's DJ-Kicks is released 19th May 2017 on CD, 2xLP and digital formats. The mix includes an exclusive Mayer production, "The Horn Conspiracy." Pre-orders are available now.

Matthew Dear To Mix First DJ-Kicks of 2017

k7346_matthew-dear_rgb_2500pxlsMatthew Dear is a man of many musical hats. A co-founder of the revered Ghostly International and Spectral Sound labels, Dear has a wide reaching discography under a number of aliases, including face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion (whose Alpha LP was released on !K7 earlier this year). Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special.

DJ-Kicks is Dear's first work under his own name in some time. The mix proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left-of-centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. DJ-Kicks also includes three exclusive new tracks; two as Audion, and one Matthew Dear original.

Matthew Dear's DJ-Kicks will be released 27th January 2017 on CD, 2LP & digital formats. Pre-orders are available now.

DANIEL AVERY DJ-KICKS

Next up to cloaveryse out a hefty year of DJ-Kicks releases is one Daniel Avery, bringing with him two exclusive new tracks and a host of techno heavy goods.

In his own words: “To me, the most appealing thing about electronic music is that it requires time and patience to fully enjoy. It’s about becoming lost in the repetition and the atmosphere. The warmth of the kick drum.

It’s important to remember to take a breath in this world. The studio and the club can offer similar experiences in that regard but it never feel like it’s running away from things. It’s almost the opposite: it’s in those moments where we stop that we can feel the most alive.

We’re constantly being told that modern generations have no attention span but it’s simply not true. There is more out there to distract us but we have not changed as humans. Kids now want to go and listen to a DJ play for ten hours and become locked in their world. A mix CD, like an album, is designed to be listened to from beginning to end. It’s something I still firmly believe in.”
