Nina Kraviz is an uncompromising artist who can claim as much influence on the current sound of dance music as anyone working in the genre. We're extremely pleased to announce that Nina will be mixing the first DJ-Kicks of 2015.
Known for the stripped down, Chicago and Detroit influence sound of her production on singles such as "Pain In My Ass" and "Ghetto Kraviz," Nina Kraviz has proved to be a driving force in a movement within dance music that prizes raw authenticity and a spontaneous production aesthetic. While that spirit is very much visible on DJ-Kicks, the mix also shows another side of Kraviz's musical identity. “People probably know me for my Dance Mania-inspired, stripped down jacking groove style of DJing," she says, "but the idea behind this particular mix was to create more of a trippy underwater vibe. A mysterious, sonic journey, inspired by the times I used to listen to late night radio growing up and imagine that all the sounds brought to me via the radio waves came directly from space.”
Almost half of the 29 tracks are exclusives from Kraviz’s трип label, including three of her own: ‘Mystery’, ‘IMPRV, ’and ‘Prozimokompleme’. They have a raw, minimalistic stripped down feel that’s clearly inspired by her Chicago and Detroit roots, sharing the same first take vibe.
DJ-Kicks is out January 26th on !K7, and is available now for pre-order via iTunes.

Just in time for summer sexiness, we have a limited batch of DJ-Kicks tote bags to sport around town. To get your hands on one, pick up Will Saul's fantastic new DJ-Kicks from the !K7 web store or select indie record shops, and it's yours for free, just cause we love you.
Will Saul is a bit of an electronic music renaissance man: DJ, producer, A&R, and label head of the respected Aus Music and Simple Records labels. He's also coming off of a big year in 2013: not only did he release his debut album under the alter ego Close, an avant guard dance-pop project that called upon high profile collaborators like Scuba and Appleblim, but so too did he make his debut in the live arena at clubs like London’s influential Fabric. With all of this under his belt, we knew a DJ-Kicks mix would be a banger, but Saul makes it clear that he's aiming for something even more special. "I wanted the mix to represent how I DJ in the sense that the majority of my sets are made up mainly of my own, or my label’s, unreleased or forthcoming music. Hopefully this gives me something unique as DJ, not just as I play tracks that no one else has, but also because they are artists and tracks that I love enough to want to sign, so they really represent what I love about electronic music. “With this in mind, I approached all my nearest and dearest for some tailor made exclusive tracks. The result is hopefully a mix that rekindles the thing I loved about listening to mixes 20 years ago – that unknown aspect where each new track is a surprise. In a time when all music/track IDs and myriad mixes are accessible at the click of a button, I hope this makes for something a little more interesting.” For an idea of the excitement possible with this approach, take a listen to an exclusive new Bicep track from the mix, below. Will Saul's DJ-Kicks mix will be released on June 16th on !K7. Full tracklist below the soundcloud player. Pre-order DJ-Kicks on iTunes and receive this track immediately. CD Track List: 01. There's a certain mystique to the life of a touring musician: new places and people every day, not a lot of sleep, the rush of performing, the monotony of transportation. In their new music video for the DJ-Kicks exclusive track "Hugo," Brandt Brauer Frick have found a way to encapsulate the experience in short form, using a rapidfire montage format culled from over 15,000 pictures shot during their recent performances. Watch the video and read Daniel Brandt's description below. DJ-Kicks is out this week, and available at local record stores as well as iTunes, Amazon and the !K7 store.
As everyone produces a big mass of photos/data on a regular basis since the smartphone is in everyone's hands, nobody is ever able to actually go through them anymore. The moments of looking back actually never happen. To take this even further we invented a new happening while touring called the "Shoot out." In a shoot out everyone takes out their smartphone and tries to take as many photos of all other people involved as possible which results in having loads of photos from different perspectives. This was the starting point of this video and also the need to have those photos not be completely lost in piles of data no one will ever go through again. It was more of a practical solution of getting those photos from the past two years into a context that people will actually see them but we also don't need to bore them off with a slide show at home as no one wants to look at personal photos from other people anymore longer than a second (except our parents). The video consists of a selection from originally around 15.000 photos. -Daniel Brandt
As the February 24th release date of Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks draws closer, the Berlin trio has shared another of their exclusive compositions from the mix. Compared to "Bommel," another original which debuted in December, "Hugo" is slightly more reserved, though no less driving. Staccato synths evoke a strobe-lit dancefloor before giving way to chugging house grove laced with the group's signature tactile percussive sounds. Stream "Hugo" below. A download is also available when signing up to Brandt Brauer Frick's email list. DJ-Kicks will be available in stores on February 24th, and pre-orders are no available through iTunes, Amazon, and the !K7 Store.
It's always a pleasure for us when an artist mines their community of creative contemporaries for custom, exclusive tracks for their mixes. Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks features five such tracks (as well as three new ones of their own) which they pressed up on one-of-a-kind dubplates in order to record their mix using only vinyl. Glenn Astro's "How I Miss You" is a haunting number whose mood fits the yearning of the vocal refrain. The full mix, which the trio recorded in the DJ booth at Berlin's mega club Watergate, is out on February 24th.
In addition to three new tracks from Brandt Brauer Frick themselves, the upcoming DJ-Kicks mixed by Berlin’s trio of Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick also features several exclusive pieces of music from their extended artistic circle. Which means … read more...
The artistic development of Brandt Brauer Frick from their debut album You Make Me Real in 2010 to this year's watershed Miami has been thrilling to watch. The rigid formula of their early work (techno arrangements, acoustic instruments) has given way to a more catholic approach to music making, all the while retaining the tactile, polyrhythmic elements that make the trio's sound so immediate. The group's entry to the DJ-Kicks series gives them the chance to further showcase their many talents; this time as curators and DJs. Wary of the sterility of some computer assembled mixes, they opted to record the mix live, during a daytime session at the legendary Berlin club Watergate, using all vinyl. As the mix contains eight previously unheard exclusive tracks (three new Brandt Brauer Frick productions and five from the group's artist community), they pressed up special vinyl dubplates of material for the mix, once again prizing a human, hand-held aesthetic even while collecting an essential batch of edgy electronic music. One of the exclusive new Brandt Brauer Frick tracks from the mix can be heard below, as premiered earlier today by Pitchfork. DJ-Kicks will be released on February 24th, 2014. Full track list after the jump.
