With two weeks to go before his DJ-Kicks mix hits stores, Will Saul has let loose with an EP featuring exclusive music produced for his mix. Having put in time as a top-notch A&R and label head helping to break some of the most vital artists in UK house and bass music, it's no surprise that there are some head-turning names contributing music here. Tracks here from Bicep, Jabru featuring Joel Culpepper, and Leon Vynehall, have all built a steady buzz online, and can be expected to be heard on forward-thinking dance floors all summer long. Add to that a key slice of expert funk from Marquis Hawkes, and you have an essential collection of tunes. Will Saul's DJ-Kicks EP can be purchased digitally at Beatport, and on vinyl at Juno. Tracklist: Bicep - "Nova" Jabru feat. Joel Culpepper - "Church" Marquis Hawkes - "Life Struggle" Leon Vynehall - "Time"
As the February 24th release date of Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks draws closer, the Berlin trio has shared another of their exclusive compositions from the mix. Compared to "Bommel," another original which debuted in December, "Hugo" is slightly more reserved, though no less driving. Staccato synths evoke a strobe-lit dancefloor before giving way to chugging house grove laced with the group's signature tactile percussive sounds. Stream "Hugo" below. A download is also available when signing up to Brandt Brauer Frick's email list. DJ-Kicks will be available in stores on February 24th, and pre-orders are no available through iTunes, Amazon, and the !K7 Store.
It's always a pleasure for us when an artist mines their community of creative contemporaries for custom, exclusive tracks for their mixes. Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks features five such tracks (as well as three new ones of their own) which they pressed up on one-of-a-kind dubplates in order to record their mix using only vinyl. Glenn Astro's "How I Miss You" is a haunting number whose mood fits the yearning of the vocal refrain. The full mix, which the trio recorded in the DJ booth at Berlin's mega club Watergate, is out on February 24th.
In addition to three new tracks from Brandt Brauer Frick themselves, the upcoming DJ-Kicks mixed by Berlin’s trio of Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick also features several exclusive pieces of music from their extended artistic circle. Which means … read more...
From his forthcoming DJ-Kicks this November, Breach shares his exclusive track "Beroving," which means "deprivation" in Dutch. It's a beautiful, evocative sound from the interface of house and techno, a world away from "Jack," but every bit as good. “Since 'Jack's' blown, I've been gigging so much, just on the road all the time. My life is missing sleep. I'm deprived of making music and being in the studio. I put this mix together and did the track in such a short space of time. I'm deprived of time at the moment so it seemed like a fitting word.”
In advance of his DJ-Kicks' November 12th release, John Talabot has shared another new exclusive track by one of his new projects Tempel Rytmik. "This is the exclusive track I produced with Alexander Berg from the mighty swedish duo Genius of Time. He's one of the most talented people I ever met and was a pleasure working in Berlin with him. Really looking forward to do some more tracks with him."
In advance of his DJ-Kicks' November 12th release, John Talabot has shared his exclusive new track "Without You," made specifically for the mix. Featuring a repeated vocal refrain drenched in reverb and razor sharp synthesizer flourishes, the track feels both fresh and classic. Keep your eye on this space for more new music from DJ-Kicks leading up to the release.
One of Maceo Plex's stated goal with his DJ-Kicks mix was to take a forward-looking approach to the music and selection, rather than getting mired in retro-ism. That emphasis on the future seems to have extended to this video interview, which sees the DJ / producer speaking about his contribution to the DJ-Kicks series amidst some incredible 3D visuals from The Butchers. Maceo Plex's DJ-Kicks is out this week. Grab a free track, see tour dates, and order the album at http://www.dj-kicks.com/maceoplex
It's always a pleasure when DJ-Kicks artists challenge themselves for the new piece of music they create for their mix. In keeping with the dark, futuristic feel of his set, Maceo Plex departs slightly from the disco and bassline sounds for which he's highly regarded and delivers a complex and reflective track in "Galactic Cinema." Beatport will have a single featuring both "Galactic Cinema" and another DJ-Kicks exclusive track "Mind on Fire" on April 15th. The full DJ-Kicks mix comes out April 29th/30th.
We're now in week two of the 27!K7 Exclusives series, and are already feeling extremely lucky to have contributions from many of our favorite artists. This week's EP features a new collaborative track from Wolf + Lamb and Soul Clap. Ever since their amazing DJ-Kicks together, we've known that it's something special when these guys work together. The EP also includes a heavy new track from Berlin's Brandt Brauer Frick. Remember to check back each Tuesday through October 16th; we'll have more great music for you.
