Matthew Dear To Mix First DJ-Kicks of 2017

k7346_matthew-dear_rgb_2500pxlsMatthew Dear is a man of many musical hats. A co-founder of the revered Ghostly International and Spectral Sound labels, Dear has a wide reaching discography under a number of aliases, including face melting techno as Jabberjaw, dark avant-pop under his own name and intricate minimal as Audion (whose Alpha LP was released on !K7 earlier this year). Now more than 15 years, five albums and 20 EPs into his esteemed career, Dear is exactly the sort of fascinating character that makes the very personal DJ-Kicks series so special.

DJ-Kicks is Dear's first work under his own name in some time. The mix proves that he is a master of subversion; someone who can head down a brain frying techno warren then effortlessly onto raw machine grooves via left-of-centre synth ditties and kaleidoscopic house music. DJ-Kicks also includes three exclusive new tracks; two as Audion, and one Matthew Dear original.

Matthew Dear's DJ-Kicks will be released 27th January 2017 on CD, 2LP & digital formats. Pre-orders are available now.

Hear Daniel Avery’s Huge Exclusive Club Track “A Mechanical Sky”

avery_mechanicalsky With his much anticipated DJ-Kicks mix due to drop next Friday, the man at its helm, London-based producer and DJ Daniel Avery, has today premiered the third and final of his original productions for the release in the form of the slow-burning, searing ‘A Mechanical Sky’. This follows ambient first taste ‘Space Echo’, accompanied by a striking animated visual from Kevin A. Freeney, and Avery’s collaboration with BleeD boss Volte-Face as Rote with ‘Look In Your Eyes’.

First teased in his Dekmantel set this August in front of a rapturous audience both at the festival and online via a live Boiler Room broadcast, ‘A Mechanical Sky’ comes in close to the album’s end point, segueing into the propulsive, shimmering techno of Edit-Select’s remix of ‘Cirklon Bells’ by Glaswegian duo Slam (aka Stuart McMillan and Orde Meikle), before ‘Space Echo’ slows down the orbit, bringing proceedings to a close in a warm soundscape of disembodied, crystalline atmospherics.

Speaking about ‘A Mechanical Sky,’ Avery commented, "A club track made exclusively for the mix. It feels good to be back in the studio and making music again. Some finish lines are appearing on the horizon.

Daniel Avery’s DJ-Kicks is released 11th November 2016. Pre-orders are available now.

Daniel Avery’s Rote Project Premieres A New Track From DJ-Kicks

preffered-danielavery0616_gullick_q8a6823-pls-credit-steve-gullickWith his DJ-Kicks album just weeks away, London-based producer and DJ Daniel Avery shares another track from the highly anticipated release. In recent months Avery has teamed up with BleeD boss Volte-Face for a new collaborative project called Rote, and today he debuts their track ‘Look In Your Eyes’ via Thump, one of three new original Avery productions on the album alongside the ambient closing track ‘Space Echo,' and the slow-burning, driving intensity of ‘A Mechanical Sky’.

Avery's DJ-Kicks mix creates a hypnotic space focusing on “music by like-minded souls” from the outer reaches of techno including international talents Svreca, Rrose, Artefakt and IORI. It is a mix concerned with the idea of taking a collective breath and allowing records their own time.

Daniel Avery’s DJ-Kicks is released 11th November 2016. Pre-orders are available now.

Marcel Dettmann Collaborates With Levon Vincent For DJ-Kicks Exclusive Track

2016_Marcel_Dettmann_DJ_Kicks_CD_8P_Booklet_3C.inddMarcel Dettmann has revealed the second exclusive track from his forthcoming DJ-Kicks compilation - a collaboration with revered producer Levon Vincent, entitled ‘Can You See.’

The pair has previously collaborated, releasing ‘Vengeance’ on Levon’s own Novel Sound label towards the end of 2015 to critical acclaim. Speaking about their relationship, Marcel explains: “Five years ago we sat in the studio and were just jamming, and started to work on some tracks… we met in Munich last year before playing together and suddenly he handed me over a test pressing of one of these tracks - I was surprised because he hadn’t said a single word about it to me before then. ‘Can You See’ was still in the drawer, so we started working on that track again, sending sound back and forth, and the result is what you can listen to now.”

‘Can You See’ sees the duo venture into darker territory; a stripped back, sub-bass laden affair, the quality of this production immediately stands out in the early stages of the mix.

Marcel Dettmann's DJ-Kicks is released 14th October on CD, 2LP & digital formats. Pre-orders are available now. A limited edition art print depicting the making of the album cover (shot by infamous Berghain photographer Sven Marquardt) is available via Bandcamp.

The original mix of ‘Let’s Do It’ was the first release on Dettmann’s own MDR label ten years ago. Rolando is an expert producer and remixer, his Ostgut Ton releases having previously been featured in Marcel’s sets, reinforcing the historic Berlin-Detroit axis.

Marcel Dettmann To Mix DJ-Kicks, Out October 2016

2016_Marcel_Dettmann_DJ_Kicks_CD_8P_Booklet_3C.inddMarcel Dettmann is a Berlin icon who can claim as much responsibility as anyone for the state of modern techno. He has worked closely with many of the genre's gatekeepers and torch bearers, including Berghain, Ostgut Ton, and Hard Wax. On his upcoming DJ-Kicks, the DJ and producer set out to make a mix that would reflect the entirety of his tastes and musical identity beyond his legendary club sets.

The mix, he says, comes "out of my personal music history, which could be described with the terms Berlin, Berghain and Hard Wax. It’s music that has accompanied me for decades… it is not a mix of brand new tracks, it’s a mixture of of all the music that shaped me over the years and of all the things that still move me today, aesthetically and acoustically.”

In addition to music carefully culled from his extensive collection, DJ-Kicks is chock full of new Dettmann productions, remixes, and edits, including collaborations with Levon Vincent and Wincent Kunth. In addition to brand new original remixes and edits, there's also an unreleased remix of Marcel's 'Let's Do It' from Ostgut Ton lablemate Rolando.

DJ-Kicks is the latest in a long series of lifetime achievements over the course of Dettmann’s career - and with so many new unreleased original Marcel Dettmann productions included, this is a landmark release for the producer. “This mix is not the picture that other people take of me," he says, "it is the picture I’d take of myself.”

Marcel Dettmann's DJ-Kicks is released 14th October on CD, 2LP & digital formats. Pre-orders are available now. A limited edition art print depicting the making of the album cover (shot by infamous Berghain photographer Sven Marquardt) is available via Bandcamp.

Stream An Exclusive Denis Sulta Track From Jackmaster’s DJ-Kicks

K7335_JACKMASTER_coverJackmaster's DJ-Kicks solidifies the reputation of one of the most in-demand DJs working today. In his work words, “the mix is influenced heavily by how I used to DJ at the first party I ever promoted, named Seismic, and another named Monox which was a straight up techno night where I was a resident from the age of 17. And although it wasn’t my plan, it turned into a kind of tribute to the cities that really formulated me as a DJ: Detroit, Chicago and Glasgow. There are a couple of wee secret weapons on there that are stolen from the guys at Rubadub, and obviously tracks Q1.1 by Basic Channel and the M-Plant bits I picked up from them too. The rest is stuff I found myself or on mates labels or produced by friends.” Denis Sulta's "MSNJ" belongs to the latter category, and is one of three exclusive tracks from the mix. Stream the track in full below.

Jackmaster's DJ-Kicks is available 8th July 2016 on CD, 2LP (w. CD insert) & digital formats. Pre-orders are available now. All physical orders from !K7's stores include a Jackmaster T-Shirt.

Download A Free Track From Portable

K7334_As For Me Last year, with his critically acclaimed track "Surrender" (which Pitchfork dubbed a 'Best New Track') appearing in re-edited form as a centerpiece for DJ Koze's DJ-Kicks mix, !K7 announced that Portable (a/k/a Alan Abrahams) would be the latest artist to sign to the label. Though he's recorded five albums, released singles & EPs on some of dance music's most respected labels, and maintained a successful label of his own, Portable remains a bit of an enigma. On his forthcoming project, we're given the opportunity to get to know the producer on a deeper level.

South African born and a celebrated live act, Portable emerged more than fifteen years ago with a sound that marries real electronic soul with deep moods and abstract grooves. He has released his minimal wares on cult labels like Perlon and Live At Robert Johnson, as well as his own Süd Electronic label. Always experimenting with rhythm and imbuing his music with a wide world of influences, his latest work is his most personal and cohesive to date.

With a full-length on the way later this year, Portable has offered the soothing and emotional vocal track 'As For Me' as a free download. Best experienced on headphones, the track is a window into Portable's headspace, and an indication of great things to come.
