Nina Kraviz discusses her roots as a DJ, the process of creating a mix, and her love of record digging in this feature shot at Berlin’s legendary Record Loft.
With two weeks to go before his DJ-Kicks mix hits stores, Will Saul has let loose with an EP featuring exclusive music produced for his mix. Having put in time as a top-notch A&R and label head helping to break some of the most vital artists in UK house and bass music, it's no surprise that there are some head-turning names contributing music here. Tracks here from Bicep, Jabru featuring Joel Culpepper, and Leon Vynehall, have all built a steady buzz online, and can be expected to be heard on forward-thinking dance floors all summer long. Add to that a key slice of expert funk from Marquis Hawkes, and you have an essential collection of tunes. Will Saul's DJ-Kicks EP can be purchased digitally at Beatport, and on vinyl at Juno. Tracklist: Bicep - "Nova" Jabru feat. Joel Culpepper - "Church" Marquis Hawkes - "Life Struggle" Leon Vynehall - "Time"
The artistic development of Brandt Brauer Frick from their debut album You Make Me Real in 2010 to this year's watershed Miami has been thrilling to watch. The rigid formula of their early work (techno arrangements, acoustic instruments) has given way to a more catholic approach to music making, all the while retaining the tactile, polyrhythmic elements that make the trio's sound so immediate. The group's entry to the DJ-Kicks series gives them the chance to further showcase their many talents; this time as curators and DJs. Wary of the sterility of some computer assembled mixes, they opted to record the mix live, during a daytime session at the legendary Berlin club Watergate, using all vinyl. As the mix contains eight previously unheard exclusive tracks (three new Brandt Brauer Frick productions and five from the group's artist community), they pressed up special vinyl dubplates of material for the mix, once again prizing a human, hand-held aesthetic even while collecting an essential batch of edgy electronic music. One of the exclusive new Brandt Brauer Frick tracks from the mix can be heard below, as premiered earlier today by Pitchfork. DJ-Kicks will be released on February 24th, 2014. Full track list after the jump.
